Ash Beckham:
When to take a stand- and when to let it go
Ash Beckham speaks in this Ted Talk essentially about choices. She is faced with a predicament when she is in a store with her niece and is mistaken for a man by a clerk. She says that it is amazing that how in a random moment you can be faced with the question of, "who am I?". She is immediately astonished by what she just heard and begins to think of what her options are in this situation. Ash must choose to either confront the clerk and miss out on her niece having the best day of her life or to simply act like it did not happen and allow her niece to bask in the glory of the frozen wonderland. She makes the correct choice by not saying anything and the situation resolves itself when the clerk apologizes and admits her mistake. Another thing Ash talks about is having to choose what you want to be in situations where you are faced with different options. Holden Caufield from J.D. Salinger's, The Catcher in the Rye, also faces situations where he is forced to make choices that could possibly have tricky outcomes. The difference between Ash and Holden's choices are that Holden's will be played out on a much larger scale due to the fact that they have to do with rough patches in his life.
Holden appears to be severely depressed and has a hard time facing adulthood. He is afraid of what lies ahead as he matures. In his eyes he has yet to find his place in the world and is a lost soul. He feels the pressure put on him by the rest of the world which may have something to do with his indulgence in cigarettes and alcohol. He encounters many obstacles in his way as he searches for where he fits. The most notable obstacle is the passing of his younger brother. This is what sends Holden into his dark, depressive state, and in turn, his lack of caring gets him expelled from yet another school. After this, Holden departs on his quest to find meaning. On his journey he becomes much more street smart. The story of Holden is very similar to the common American college student because in school they try to find a potential career that best suits who they are much like how Holden is trying to find where he fits in the puzzle that is, the world.
