Andrew Solomon:
How the worst moments in our lives make us who we are
Author Andrew Solomon, shares with us his adverse childhood and how he was forced to overcome different things that brought him down in order to be successful today. He mentions that kids used to tease him about how he sounded and he said that he couldn't even eat lunch in the cafeteria because he would be harassed for sitting at an all girls table(he is a homosexual). Growing up he was also cast out by his peers when a boy in his class invited everyone except him. Solomon continues to add to things that may cause depression early on in people's lives and explains that in overcoming these things in our past we may be inspired to strive for excellence. Holden Caufield of J.D. Salinger's, The Catcher in the Rye, faces a severe bump in the road early in his life which begins his descent into depression.
When Holden was a bit younger than portrayed in the book, his brother passed away from cancer. This severely scarred Holden and he struggled to react adequately. Instead of being strong and trying to cope with what happened to him, he begins to partake in illegal activity (drinking and smoking) as well as not care one bit about school. Him not caring leads to his expulsion and starts his journey on which he tries to find how to live a happy life. American citizens can relate to this because tragic things like the loss of loved ones happen on a daily basis, but one should try not to focus on this and instead focus on ways to accept their situation.
